About Us

The Edinburgh Eastern Cemetery Company Ltd was incorporated in 1962 and combines the operation and management of:

Direcor: Mary B. FairbairnBoth cemeteries are non denominational and despite being affected by the popularity of cremation both still open and working cemeteries. The national statistics say 72% of the population of the United Kingdom is cremated.

It is peculiar to Edinburgh to have cemeteries still in private hands and others include The Dean Cemetery, Seafield Cemetery and the Catholic Mount Vernon Cemetery.

The Company has been owned and run by Mary Baird Fairbairn since November 1981.

The main business of the cemetery operatives is the maintenance of the combined area of 30 acres of grounds which takes second place when burials are required.

The grass is cut regularly in the summer months (target is every two weeks weather allowing) from Mid March to October. Leaves are a major problem November and December along with ground subsidence throughout the cemetery when the soil compacts faster when there have been heavy rain showers. The cost of this work is subsidised by the income of annual fees of 25 paid for the maintenance of graves.

The main business of the office staff is booking funerals, keeping the Register and records updated, Health and Safety records, transport, wages, accounts and searching records for the very popular pastime of genealogy.

The records are held on micro-fiche and for a search to be carried out, the date of death is essential as our records are recorded chronologically (as they happened).
